Surely as the water pump will be driven by the cam/aux belts and its speed will be determined by the engine rpm it wont have been spinning any faster, and surely the lack of pressure should have put less strain on it rather than more? The end result is that a garage replaced her radiater and water pump. I had always said she needs to take it to a garage to get it fixed but I always got the same reply of money issues and car maintanence is a low priority for her.Ī few days later I heard that she had broke down and the recovery guy blamed the missing coolant resivior cap, apparently she had managed to run it dry of coolant though I'm not sure how accurate this information is. I put some radweld into the system to see if it would stop the leak, topped it up with coolant and gave her the remaining 2 litres in case it needed topping up again. I recommended she get one asap and the best place to do so was from a scrapyard (she had also managed to lose her wheel brace as well so could kill 2 birds with 1 stone.) She enquired about getting one from ebay to which I said you would need to know which Mk your car was as Ford have a habit changing things constantly. She had been continually topping up the coolant and had lost the cap a few days earlier. She continued to drive it as it was and before Christmas she asked me to have another check of her car. I suggested she get a garage look at it but she never did. I looked at intially for her and as there was no mayonise under the oil cap, I didnt think it was a head gasket but couldnt find the source of the leak. It had been losing coolant for a few months. I was just wondering what are the implacations of running a car with no cap on the coolant resovior?Ī friend has a 56 plate Ford Fiesta with about 50,000 miles on the clock.
